My Thoughts on Halloween as an Adult

Halloween was my FAVORITE holiday as a child. Free candy? Dressing up? Heck yeah! I was always into it. I had a lot of fun in every costume I ever wore.

However, I've had the unfortunate pleasure of growing up. Now I have to buy my candy and apparently I'm supposed to show more skin with costumes or something. Society is weird sometimes. I don't mind not having to wander around and get cold for some candy, but it's interesting how it feels to want to still be involved in something. I'm stressing about what to dress up as, if I even will dress up. I want to impress, however at the same time, it's so expensive to do anything.

I enjoy the activities that come with Halloween though. Smashing or carving pumpkins, going out for fall treats (pumpkin and apple donuts), wandering Spirit Halloween, dressing like a goth with less judgement,  and justifying having more sweets finally. I'm not a big fan of horror films, but the occasional Tim Burton film gets me my spooky(ish) movie fix. Not to mention a spooky themed D&D one-shot can be fun too.

With age, I really enjoy the time leading up to Halloween more than Halloween itself. I think it's okay though. It keeps the seasonal depression at bay.

  1. What a great post. Yes, things change. Do they have to? Can we recapture that youthful enthusiasm? Maybe? I'm intrigued by what you say about the pre-Halloween phase. I wonder what that magic is about? Great post!
