Writing Letters

As a child, I was obsessed with possibly receiving a handwritten letter to me. Except, I didn't know anyone or have a pen-pal. I just watched too many Disney Princess and Barbie princess movies as a three-year-old. Those movies have formed this hopeless romantic adult that now does send letters.

Letter writing is an almost dead art. I don't know many people that say "Oh yeah, I gotta stop at the post office sometime today. I wrote a letter." It's certainly much easier to just send a text or make a phone call. You don't even need to send a card anymore, you can download one and send it through Facebook if you wanted to. I personally don't have a pen-pal or someone I only communicate with through writing exclusively. I'm entertaining it, but I'm not sure yet.

Who do I write to then? My boyfriend, Alex! We live about 140 miles apart, (Hammond to Indianapolis,) and have written occasional letters for fun! Alex and I started writing around last Christmas when we included hand-written notes in the gifts we shipped to each other. I got really excited about a handwritten letter that I decided to keep up with it. We keep letter contents a secret from each other and usually don't even mention what the contents are. I typically write a few of my thoughts about upcoming trips and visits we plan and how I'm excited about them. I also enjoy writing because I purchased such pretty stationery to write with. Alex keeps his letters more minimal, often typing because his handwriting isn't the best.

I think the best part of writing to someone is waiting for their response to receiving a letter for something. Letters are so unexpected but can be such a thoughtful gesture. I'm very excited about the letter I just sent to Alex because he doesn't even know I sent it. (Unless he somehow found this blog.) Now I must wait for it to be delivered through snail mail.

I don't expect people to drop everything and start writing just because I enjoy it. Texting and phone calls are so much more convenient and easy. I just really enjoy the artsy aspect of writing to someone.

  1. Raquel, I love this post! I am also a hopeless romantic! I love all the "corny" stuff seriously I wish I was a Disney princess. I also really enjoy writing letters, I used to write back and forth with my friend who lived in a different state; the letters would always be completely different content then our text conversations. It's cute how you and your boyfriend write letters, I love keeping them to re-read when I miss the person. I bet writing the letters also helps you become better at writing for class!
